Background of the Study
Effective enforcement practices are critical for fostering a robust compliance culture within banks. Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria has established comprehensive enforcement measures, including regular internal audits, automated compliance monitoring, and continuous staff training to ensure adherence to regulatory standards (Adejumo, 2023). A strong compliance culture minimizes operational risks, enhances transparency, and builds customer trust. Through consistent enforcement, the bank seeks to instill a sense of accountability and ethical behavior across all levels of the organization (Ibrahim, 2024). Digital technologies have further enabled the bank to monitor compliance in real time, thereby ensuring prompt corrective actions when deviations occur. However, despite these initiatives, challenges persist due to inconsistencies in enforcement across branches and difficulties in updating practices to meet evolving regulatory requirements (Chinwe, 2025). This study will investigate the enforcement practices at Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria and assess their impact on cultivating a culture of compliance, with the goal of identifying areas for improvement and proposing strategies to achieve uniform enforcement throughout the organization.
Statement of the Problem
Although Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria has invested in rigorous enforcement practices, significant challenges remain in establishing a consistent compliance culture. Inconsistencies in applying regulatory guidelines, delays in updating compliance protocols, and poor communication between compliance and operational units have been noted (Olutola, 2023). These gaps result in variations in how rules are interpreted and followed, undermining the overall integrity of the bank’s operations. Such enforcement challenges can lead to regulatory breaches, financial losses, and reputational damage. The bank’s internal audits have revealed that despite robust policies, practical implementation is often fragmented. This study seeks to explore the factors hindering effective enforcement and to determine their impact on the compliance culture within Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria, aiming to develop recommendations that ensure a more uniform and effective compliance environment.
